KORVATUNTURI FISHING AREA

This is the widest uniform river-fishing area in eastern Lapland, spreading out from the Savukoski municipal centre and reaching 60 kilometres north. It extends from the Uurajoki mouth to the Kairijoki mouth including the tributaries of the Kemijoki River with ca. 40 km of main river channel, and the watercourse of Kairijoki with over 60 km of main channel.

There are also over 200 kilometres of small rivers and brooks suitable for fishing. In these magnificent fishing grounds natural grayling, brown trout, brook trout and whitefish are lying in ambush to attack your flies and lures. All fish species are supported with fry stockings. Catch-sized trout is also stocked. These waters are recommended mainly for fly fishing and light lure fishing. The terrain in the Koilliskaira (North East Wilds) primarily comprises dry pine forests, which are easy to hike. The Wild North organisation has built a lot of lean-to type sheds, Lapp huts, cooking shelters, fireplaces and boat ramps in this area to serve the fishermen. The Korvatunturi waters are especially suitable for canoe paddling, comprising ca. 150 km of rivers recommended for canoeists.

Especially the Kairijoki River is easy to paddle and good for first-timers. The best way to get acquainted with the river is to rent a canoe and paddle downstream, while fishing the torrents, streams and smooth backwaters. By the river you’ll find a full-service tourist centre ‘Kairiver’, which rents canoes and transports them to the necessary places.

The Kairijoki River provides wonderful fishing and nature experiences with beautiful landscape in the authentic wilderness to fishers and hikers. The width of the Kairijoki varies from 10 to 30 meters. The riverbanks are easy to move on, and in most places there is space enough for casting the fly. The Kairijoki is recommended for fly and ultra light fishing. The river is easily governed just from one bank and by normal water level can be waded across without problems. Try crankbaits of brown and silver tones with black backbone. In the Korvatunturi fishing waters the small lures are the best, and the fisher seldom finds over 6 cm lures useful.

The main channel of the Kemijoki varies from fast flowing races to slow rapids and smooth waters. The upper Kemijoki is good for fly-fishing and spinning. Take at least wading boots with you. The most common trophy fish here are grayling and trout. Flies, worth trying in these waters, are at least Red Tag, dark green pupas, Nalle Puh, Klinkhämer and some small brown streamers.

In the small brooks flowing into the Kemijoki and its tributaries are present brown trout, which clutch at your lure like a lightning, and there is also a natural stock of brook char. With small, size 1-2 Mepps, Abu, Kuusamo and Laxman spinners, with careful casting and quiet movements a small rivulet may surprise you in a very pleasant way.
