The watercourse of the Tornio and Muonio Rivers (which the locals call 'Väylä' - the Route) forms a natural border between Finland and Sweden. Tornio-Muoniojoki River is the longest free-flowing salmon river in the whole Europe. The river's length together with headwaters totals some 550 kilometers. This watercourse provides a variety of fishing opportunities with either slowly flowing streams or fast surging rapids. 'Väylä' is a popular salmon fishing route, where hooking up red fish is not expensive. In addition to that, most of the fishing spots are easy to reach.

The first remarkable rapids fishing site is at the Matkakoski Rapid, which provides fishing mainly from the bank on the Swedish side of the river. Matkakoski Rapid also includes a small calm area for rowing fishing. Daily catches can be extremely abundant when the salmon rise up the river.

Next good place for salmon is at Juoksenki near Ylitornio village. The Kattilakoski Rapid there offers places for fishing from the bank with fly or spinning.

Korpikoski, Valkeakoski, Purukoski and Hirvaskoski Rapids surge near Pello. Here you will find many fine spots for casting from the bank. North of the Pello municipal center are some popular rowing fishing sites.

Around the joining point of the Tornio and Muonio Rivers runs the magnificent Lappeankoski Rapid, which mainly is recommended for boat fishing. Lappeankoski gives its best catches around Midsummer.

Near Kolari village you'll find the Aarreaniva Race, and Aarreankoski and Mukkakoski Rapids, which are especially suitable for fly fishing.

Around the Muonio district you'll find a lot of good salmon spots, such as Pakamukka, Kangonkoski and Puristakoski Rapids. On the Torniojoki River mainly crankbait is used when fishing from the rowing boat. Year after year, fish is caught with Nils Master Spearhead, Jan and Wäylä crankbaits. In the beginning of the season, the local specialty, spinfluga, is used for salmon fishing when the water is still high.
